Kurnool District is a district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, located in the west-central part of the state and is bounded by Mahabubnagar district of Telangana in the north, Raichur district of Karnataka in the northwest, Bellary district of Karnataka in the west, Ananthapur district in the south, YSR Kadapa district in the South East and Prakasham district in the east. The city of Kurnool is the headquarters of the district. It has a population of 4,053,463 of which 28.35% were urban as of 2011. It occupies 10th and 2nd place in terms of area in Largest Districts of India and Andhra Pradesh respectively, [3] accounting for 17,658 square kilometres (6,818 sq mi) and 53rd place in terms of Population in India.

Mahanandi Temple is an ancient temple located on the eastern side of Nallamala Hills. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for its architecture and it has been time and again renovated by various kings. The temple is said to contain unique qualities. Devotees believe that the water in the tank has medicinal properties. The source of the tank water remains unknown. In front of the Linga made of rough uncut rocks stands a huge Nandi and hence the name Mahanandi.Belum Caves are situated in vicinity of the Belum Village. These are considered as the second largest caves in the country, after the Meghalaya Caves. The caves have three cavities, amongst which the central cavity serves as the entrance to the caves. These have numerous chambers, fresh water galleries and passages. The natural artworks formed by stalagmite and stalactite can be seen in the caves.

Belum Caves are ranked second largest after Meghalaya Caves and it is the longest cave in India. Out of the three well like cavities, the one in the middle serves as the main entrance. The exquisite formations of stalactite and stalagmite are stunning. So is color illumination of Belum Caves. The caves present an interesting study to the onlooker with its musical chamber, meditation hall, simhadwaram and patalganga. The caves rightly deserve the title ‘Unique Eco-Tourism Project’ bestowed on it by the Indian government.
